On 26 July, the world observes World Mangrove Day, UNESCO's International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. To mark the occasion, the JHTA Product, Energy & Sustainability Committee has produced "Mangroves Matter," a publication prepared for the Association's membership and the wider public.
Mangroves are among Jamaica's most valuable natural assets. They shield our shorelines from storm surge and erosion, keep land-based pollution off the reefs, and serve as nursery grounds for an estimated 75 percent of Jamaica's game and commercial fish. World Bank analysis shows that during a major storm, mangroves can reduce flood impacts and damages by nearly 50 percent across the island.
The publication covers the global and Jamaican case for mangrove conservation, five best practices for the preservation and care of mangroves, and how the tourism sector can lead on their protection. Protecting mangroves is a shared responsibility: businesses, residents, visitors, schools, and community groups all have a role to play.
