World Wetlands Day

World Wetlands Day

World Wetlands Day is observed annually on February 2 to raise global awareness about the critical role wetlands play for people and the planet, marking the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971.

This year’s observance comes at a particularly meaningful time for Jamaica. In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, several wetland areas were significantly disrupted, with fires and environmental damage underscoring just how vulnerable—and vital—these ecosystems are. Wetlands serve as natural buffers against extreme weather, protect biodiversity, purify water, and support livelihoods that are closely linked to our tourism and hospitality sector.

The 2026 theme, “Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage,” highlights the enduring value of indigenous and community-based knowledge in sustaining wetlands and preserving cultural identity across generations. These time-tested practices are essential to conservation, resilience, and long-term environmental stewardship.

The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association reaffirms its support for the protection and sustainable management of wetlands. Their preservation is not only an environmental imperative but also integral to the resilience, participation, and future growth of Jamaica’s tourism industry and the communities it supports.

As we reflect on the lessons of Hurricane Melissa, let us strengthen collaboration, respect traditional knowledge, and play our part in safeguarding these invaluable ecosystems—for today and for generations to come.
